Riccarton HAPPY FACES streets could bear brunt of bus changes BY ANDREW KING A proposed bus exchange in Riccarton Rd could cause traffic problems in nearby streets. People are concerned that drivers trying to avoid delays around the new bus exchange, planned between Matipo St and Deans Ave on Riccarton Rd, will head down their streets. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chair Helen Broughton has asked for modelling to be done by the city council’s traffic engineering team to see what impact more cars would have on the areas off Riccarton Rd. “The streets we want to be looked at are Rata, Kauri and Rimu Sts mainly because residents have raised concerns from there,” she said. “We felt that the city council, instead of waiting to see what happens, should be able to do modelling first.

“City council traffic engineering advised it would be quite an easy task to undertake.” Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock Residents Association chairman Geoff Friend said they had no problems with the proposal of more public transport just that care was taken not to push traffic into other areas. “There is concern in this neck of the woods that traffic might be aggravated in our streets,” he said. “The city council’s case seems to be that there would be less cars because of the buses. I’ll believe that when it happens.” Ms Broughton said that with the addition of a bus exchange there could be as many as four buses queued up at one time forcing drivers to look to the side streets for a quicker option. •Turn to page 2

Taking the kids to footy a good choice Canterbury rugby’s popular Take a Kid to Footy ticket deal is back for the 2015 ITM Cup season thanks to new sponsor, Fresh Choice. Fresh Choice will be the official naming rights sponsor for Take a Kid to Footy for at least the next three years. Take a Kid to Footy tickets are $14 (plus service fee) for one adult and one child. Each additional child is $5.50 each. There are dedicated Take a Kid to Footy seating areas at AMI Stadium and children get a free goody bag filled with snacks, a drink and a collectable for each Canterbury home game. Tickets will go on public sale for the ITM Cup on Monday for individual games. Canterbury’s first home game is against Counties Manukau on Sunday, August 23 (4.35pm). Canterbury Rugby chief executive Hamish Riach said the union is delighted to have a successful and locally-focused brand like Fresh Choice on board. “Take a Kid to Footy is such an important product for us because it provides an affordable way for families to get along to the Canterbury games, and FreshChoice is a

great fit,” he said. “With three afternoon home games this season we expect Take a Kid to Footy tickets to be in high demand, so it will be great to see lots of families coming along to support their team and we are grateful to FreshChoice for helping to make that possible.” Fresh Choice has three Christchurch stores at Barrington, Merivale and Park-

lands. Parklands owner Julian Brown said they are proud to be supporting an initiative that is aimed at making rugby affordable and fun for its youngest fans. “This has been such a successful local initiative, making it easier for Canterbury families to get along to the game, and we are pleased to be able to help ensure that it continues.”

Bus changes could affect Riccarton streets •From page 1 “It wasn’t intended it to impact them too much. But buses will certainly have an impact on those streets.” She said that due to a new bus system being adopted by the city council in 2013 there will be more infrastructure spread around the city and it could impact traffic. “We now have the hubs and spokes model. They [city council] believe there should be four different hubs around the city and Riccarton will be one of them. “The other model seems simpler, but the city council voted for a change.” She said there was also concern for those businesses further down Riccarton Rd towards Deans Ave that there will be less on-street parking for customers. “There will be traffic going past they just will not be able to stop.” ECan commissioner Rex Williams said that the public transport modelling experts have looked at Christchurch and come up with a different system then was previously in place. “Traditionally everything came into the middle then went out again. Modelling from experts said you can do it differently. “You have routes that go around the suburbs bringing people to those hubs,” he said. “Then feeder lines take more direct routes. The essential thing is to have a high frequency of buses 1015 minutes apart at peak times,” Mr Williams said.

Small fire at The Hub

Road name approved

The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has approved the new name for a road in the Longhurst Subdivision in Halswell. It will be named Derek Anderson Place after a city councillor and Riccarton community board member.

Shoppers were evacuated as firefighters responded to a call at The Hub, Hornby on Thursday. The fire was inside the Pak’nSave and forced a complete evacuation of the mall. Shoppers were kept outside in the car park until the all clear was given about an hour later. Pak’nSave employees were allowed back inside the shop to clean up foam from the fightfighters. Shoppers said a bin was on fire in the entrance to the supermarket. PHOTO: FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Give way signs

New bus service proposed BY ANDREW KING

Environment Canterbury is proposing a new commuter service that would run from Hornby to Rangiora. It is requesting feedback on the route as well as several other changes to try to reduce the traffic congestion coming into the city and through to Hornby. The new line would follow the current Blue Line route through Rangiora which would then travel

3

south via Flaxton Rd and Skewbridge Rd to Silverstream where a park and ride facility would be set up. A park and ride system is where you can drive to a station to catch a bus into town with the cost of parking included in the bus fare. The service would travel past Christchurch Airport via Orchard Rd and finish at The Hub Hornby. This would be an express service

with no drop-offs before the Johns and Harewood Rd intersection in the mornings and no pick-ups after the same intersection in the afternoons. There would be four morning and four late afternoon trips each weekday. Buses would be equipped with cycle racks. The aim is to improve both the frequency and coverage of services to encourage greater use of public transport, which will help to re-

duce congestion on the Northern Motorway. Submission on the proposal can be made by email to metroreview@ ecan.govt.nz or by phoning 366 8855. There will also be two drop-in sessions on July 25 at the Kaiapoi Club from 10.30am through to 1pm and at the Flat White Cafe in Pegasus from 2pm until 4pm. The Rangiora Library will also hold a drop-in session on August 1 from 10.30am until 1pm.

The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has approved nine new give way signs in the Wigram Skies subdivision. As the development of the subdivision is ongoing and covers a large area of land the reports to resolve the markings and controls have been broken down into various parts for the convenience of reporting to the board. This is the second addition of traffic controls which covers the area bounded by Springs Rd, Sioux Ave, Mustang Ave and Caudron Rd.

Paint for walkway

The Brockworth walkway will be getting a fresh coat of paint. Recently strong winds tore a climbing plant off one of the walls. The plant had to be removed, leaving the wall bare. Deans Avenue Precinct Society committee member Red Maddock, who maintains the walkway, has arranged for a local artist, Damian Holt, to paint a mural on this section of wall. Mr Holt has painted some of the existing murals on behalf of DAPS. Some of these were part of the post-earthquake flowering of street art in Christchurch.

Sports nut has eyes on sevens at Tokyo Burnside High student Becky Davidson is a top rippa rugby and touch player. She now has her eyes on playing sevens for New Zealand at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She talks to Fraser Walker-Pearce Thanks for chatting with me Becky. Now obviously you’re involved with heaps of sports, what is your favourite? How far do you want to go with it? Sevens, because I love the space and being able to run, and the environment and general fitness aspects. My goal is to make the New Zealand team and go to the Olympics, not Rio but the next one. If I keep training then for sure I think I can make it. You’re an ambassador for the Forward Foundation, what does that mean for people who don’t know what that is? How long have you been involved with it? How does it help you? I try to help promote minority sports, and I help set up organisations that girls can be involved in. I help with projects to get people involved in sports, for rugby I get involved with training sessions; people come to the trainings for fun, but hopefully it can become more competitive. You’re also involved with the New Zealand tag rugby team. Could you explain what that sport is and what tournaments

AMBITIOUS: Becky Davidson’s goal is to represent New Zealand at sevens in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

you have lined up for that? It’s pretty much an alternative to league, it’s rippa rugby basically. It’s league rules except you rip the tag off the player. I’m going to Australia for the World Cup in December. I reckon New Zealand have a very good chance of winning it. I think the New Zealand Maori team usually wins, it seems to be their main sport in the North Island. Are you still at school? What’s your favourite subject? Do you have a part-time job? Yes, I’m in year 13 at Burnside High School. My favourite subject is sports leadership. It’s where I learn to coach and go on courses, theory work and coach a team; I coach the Rolleston Primary School netball team, and they’re doing really well. I work for Sport Canterbury, doing Kiwi Sport holiday programmes in Rolleston

and Pioneer, I just started last holidays. I coach the juniors; at the moment – they love playing octopus and we just started basketball with them. How big is sport in your life? Do you have spare time at all? Could you run me through a typical week of practices and games? It’s huge; it takes up a lot of my time. If I’m not doing anything I’ll do Cross-Fit, I’ve been doing it all this year in Rolleston. Sometimes I have spare time! I do normal stuff; go on Facebook, watch TV, and I love Shortland St. Monday morning would start with Cross-Fit, at night I have a Canterbury women’s training course for rugby. Tuesday I coach the primary netball team, and have Suburbs rugby training; where I play centre or second five-eighth. Wednesday I do Cross-Fit in the morning, then a game of school girl rugby; then basketball training and netball training. Wednesday is definitely the hardest day, and I’m usually injured after most Wednesdays. Thursday I try to rest but I have rugby training for Suburbs. Friday I have a basketball game and Cross-Fit. On Saturday I coach netball, play netball and then rugby. Sunday I have a basketball game. But I think I might stop playing some of my other sports so I can start to focus on rugby.

Olympics New patrol car BY ANDREW KING

LINE BREAK: Davidson on the charge for the Canterbury womens sevens team. Have you ever been injured? What’s your worst? Did you have to take time off sport? At the moment I’ve chipped my pinky finger, but I just tape it up and keep going. My knees are pretty sore from being overworked. I actually took it down a notch for about a week, but then I just taped up my injuries and kept going. If you can’t be a professional sportsperson, what would you want to be? I guess I’d want to be a nutritionist, or a sports coach, and I was also looking into the police force. But whatever it is, it’d probably have to be something physical. I’m very interested in nutrition, and I’ve been to a few people that have helped me with diets and other stuff.

A fresh set of wheels will help keep the streets safe and secure. The Riccarton Community Patrol has just received an upgrade to their patrol vehicle. With the group growing it was essential that it gets a car that can accommodate its needs for training and patrolling. Riccarton Community Patrol coordinator Geoff Parfitt was excited to show off the newest tool in their never-ending search for safer streets. “With the old vehicle it was a little bit awkward to train people,” he said. “We now have 34 people involved with the patrols. This will help us keep out and about.” The old vehicle was also a Toyota RAV4 but was only a two-door which was hard for the group to train new members in. The patrol has been in operation for 15 years now and has built a fantastic relationship with the community and the university. “Canterbury University students have come along way from when we started.” Mr Parfitt said they have worked hand in hand with the university to make sure that they weren’t getting a raw deal when it came to problems in the community. “At the end of the day all we want is a better, safer community. And the NEW WHEELS: The new vehicle that will allow the university students are part of that. Ronald McDonald’s new board member A Christchurch lawyer has been appointed as the newest member of the Ronald McDonald House South Island’s board table. Julie Hands has been bestowed the Institute of Directors’ First Steps in Governance Award, giving her an internship position on the charity’s board. Institute of Directors’ Canterbury branch chair Janice Fredric said the judges were impressed by Ms Hands’ ambition, focus and leadership potential. “Julie is an exceptional young woman who has already taken on a range of leadership roles in both her career and the community. Her breadth of skill and empathy for the cause will make her a real asset to the Ronald McDonald House South Island board.” Ms Hands, a resource management and commercial solicitor for Duncan Cotterill, says the award is an honour. “The board seems as though it has a great dynamic and there’s a lot of diverse knowledge and experience there. I’m excited to learn from them and hope this will be the first step in a long governance career.” Ms Hands will also receive mentoring from an experienced director, $810 toward Institute of Directors’ professional development courses, and a one-year membership of the Institute of Directors.

Long-time trainee floors opposition Paul Williams of The Flooring Centre in Riccarton, has won a major industry award. He won the Flooring, Planning and Design Trainee of the Year Award but is not the typical trainee that normally enters the event. “I’ve been doing flooring for more than 30 years, so I had quite a good base knowledge,” he said. Mr Williams finds it odd to be called a trainee at this stage in his career, he says he is pleased with his decision to partake in gaining the qualification. “There were a few gaps in my knowledge, particularly around the installation of flooring, because I’ve always been on the retail side of things. “Our industry has changed a lot over the years, and I realised that I needed to keep up with these changes.” So after years of encouraging his staff to undertake the qualification that is specially designed for flooring retail staff through BCITO, he enrolled himself. “I thought well here I am telling everyone else to do it, maybe I should go through it myself,” Mr Williams said. “I would encourage other experienced people to undertake this qualification. I don’t think you ever stop learning in this industry.” The Building and Construction

Industry Training Organisation’s awards aims to recognise exceptional performance by tradespeople in the flooring industry. Held at the Addington Events Centre, it is the flooring industry’s largest annual get together. As part of his BCITO programme, Paul remained in full time employment and his learning was assessed by the Allied Trades Institute in Christchurch. The award was based on his performance undertaking a range of tasks throughout his training. Allied Trades Institute principal tutor Jeff Henry was impressed with Mr Williams work. “Mr Williams was highly organised throughout the programme with all assessments completed to a very thorough standard either on or before time,” he said.

AWARD-WINNING: Paul Williams won a major flooring industry award. “Mr Williams’ experience and his professionalism stood out as he led from the front with the team from The Flooring Centre,” Mr Henry says. BCITO chief executive Ruma Karaitiana said the flooring apprentice of the year is a great way of encouraging best practice among tradespeople. “We are right behind initiatives that provide a benchmark for tradespeople and challenge those committed to training to stand out from their peers and really put their skills to the test. “There’s currently a massive demand for professional tradespeople in New Zealand, so we want to encourage more people to seek a career in building and construction and undertake industry training as part of this growing industry.”

Merivale planter boxes target for vandals BY ANDREW KING

Late night vandals are destroying Merivale’s bid to be greener. Shrubs in planter boxes along Papanui Rd, that are maintained by the Merivale Business Association and the city council, have been repeatedly destroyed. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has had concerns raised with them about the damage beside the Merivale Mall. Traiteur of Merivale owner and head of the business association, Maarten Loeffen, said it was a regular thing that had to stop. “Friday and Saturday night is when the damage occurs. It is not only sad that they vandalise the plants but they also throw it against the buildings spreading dirt and rubbish all over the place,” he said. Mr Loeffen said it had been happening for years now and the city council will have to look at new ways to stop the damage. “I have approached the council with the idea to put a camera in my shop facing out towards the plants. I will look after it. “I have seen people doing this in the early hours of the morning but have not wanted to go out there by myself when there is more than one.” Mr Loeffen confronted a lone plant destroyer one morning only to receive a lot of abuse for doing so. “I asked one young man if he

would like me to come around to his parents’ house and rip out their plants.” The young man’s response was unprintable. Community board deputy chairman David Cartwright said there was really no excuse for it but they would be looking at ways to prevent the trees from getting ripped out. “What a bunch of idiots the city has. Can’t they leave the trees alone,” he said. “We need to build a better fixing system for the planter boxes that allows water to pass through and keeps the trees in place. “That may be funded by the Merivale Business Association. We may make an application to the city council for funding for the upgrades.”

Talking with spirit gets book award nomination Addington clergyman Michael Cocks is a finalist in this year’s Mind Body Spirit Literary Awards. Rev. Cocks’ (right) book, Into The Wider Realm, is about his conversations with the spirit of Stephen the Martyr over a period of eight years. He is one of three Canterbury finalists, joining Castle Hill documentary maker and monk, Greg Hopkinson for his work Boundless: A Wayward Entrepreneur’s Search for Peace, and retired Sumner-Redcliffs Anglican minister, Ron Hay for his book, Finding The Forgotten God. Greymouth’s Thomas M Fairs is also a finalist for his book, In Human Terms, about the imbalance man has in its relationship with the material world and organic life. They are four of 11 finalists,

competing against a range of writers including a university professor, a methamphetamine survivor and a mental health commissioner for a $20,000 prize pool, thanks to a bequest from the late businessman, Ashton Wylie. Mind Body Spirit Literary Awards director Tim Eddington said the finalists’ works are remarkable stories written by people from all walks of life and from all over New Zealand. “The finalists make for fascinating and inspiring reading and cover a wide range of topics: A woman tells her story of overcoming methamphetamine addiction, the Pacifica concept of ‘aroha atu aroha mai’ being fundamental to well-being and health is examined, the evolution of mysticism is revealed and there’s a book from

a university professor describing ways in which we can re-wire our brains to be less self-centred.” Mr Eddington said this year’s entries were of a very high standard. “These finalists demonstrate the best writing since the awards’ inception 12 years ago.” The awards are unique in the

country for their encouragement of writing in the mind, body, spirit genre. There are two judging categories: Best book and best unpublished manuscript. Rev. Cocks, Rev. Hay, Greg Hopkinson and Thomas M Fairs are finalists in the book category. The complete list of 2015 Mind Body Spirit Literary Awards finalists are: • Book Category Janet Balcombe: Take A Walk On the Wild Side Michael Cocks: Into The Wider Dream Thomas M Fairs: In Human Terms Ron Hay: Finding The Forgotten God Greg Hopkinson: Boundless: A Wayward Entrepreneur’s Search

for Peace Julie Leibrich: Sanctuary: The Discovery of Wonder • Unpublished Manuscript Category Keith Hill: Clapping with two Hands Hugh Major: From Monkey to Moth: An Imaginal Evolution Dr Karlo Mila: Mana Moana Sue Reidy: Small Steps to Happiness: A Guide to Enriching Your Life One Step at a Time Rohana Ulluwishewa: Spirituality Demystified: Understanding Spirituality in Rational Terms There are two prizes of $10,000 for the winner of each category. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at The Ashton Wylie Charitable Trust’s own venue, Hopetoun Alpha in Auckland on August 14.

Iconic race finish stays at pier

Family affair on court Two mothers were able to teach their daughters a lesson on the basketball court. Halswell players, Marinda Van Vuuren and Fionna Chapman came up against their daughters Natasha Van Vuuren, and Annalia Chapman who were playing for Minties in a premier grade game at Cowles Stadium. Halswell won 54-47. Halswell player, Marinda van Vuuren said: “We beat them (Minties). But it was a very close game. I don’t think I ended up marking Natasha because she didn’t want to mark me. We only get competitive when it comes to sports, never at home. We’ve got a very friendly rivalry.” Fionna Chapman was also playing for Halswell alongside her other daughter Aleni, as well as playing against her daughter Annalia. The Halswell Women’s Premier team last tasted success winning the first round Patron’s trophy in 2013, while it last won the Championship in the 1993 to 1995 seasons. The Halswell basketball club is one of the oldest single sex clubs in the Canterbury competition. The club was formed back in 1969, and the founding members were Helen Lightfoot, Dianne Burrowes, Alice Whittaker, Francie Stuart and the Halswell policeman’s wife, Norma de Zwart. Today’s club members are

New Brighton will again be home to the finish line of the Coast to Coast in 2016 and beyond. This year was the first time the famous race finished in New Brighton after previously ending in Sumner. The finish line will be set up outside the New Brighton Library by the pier on the weekend of February 12, 2016. Organisers have also locked in New Brighton past 2016 but could not confirm for how many years. New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Zaanen said it was “wicked.” Mr Zaanen was a big part of this year’s event, he was the transition manager at the finish line. He said it was a big part of the summer events calendar for the suburb and to have it confirmed the Coast to Coast was returning was a massive boost. “The events calendar we’re working on at the moment is fantastic. New Brighton is the place to be and is the new events centre outside of the

city centre. It’s exciting to have so many events coming to New Brighton and obviously a lot of local ones are going gangbusters too. So to have more events is good.” Mr Zaanen said the event worked well in New Brighton as both the event and the suburb are going through a rejuvenation process. “That’s such a big part of it, the vision of rejuvenation for New Brighton, and the Coast to Coast, with both in a rejuvenating process. There is a lot of energy and effort in doing both and that’s bloody exciting.” There are already plans to improve the finish line experience but details on those improvements were not available. Entries are already open for next year’s Coast to Coast with prizes up for grabs for people who enter before July 31 including a $5000 sponsorship package. Organisers have also added a school category with the minimum age being lowered to 14. The new category is a team event for three people. ▌IN ▌ BRIEF Club applies for funding

Extreme cold causes problems BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER The extreme frosts of the last week have resulted in a number of calls to properties where hot water cylinders have leaked and caused flooding in the building or where sprinkler systems have frozen solid and leaked. I can certainly understand, turning the hot water tap on in the kitchen at home first thing in the morning has resulted in slushy ice in the sink. We were fortunate enough though not to have our pipes freeze solid enough to split. There were also a number of car crashes caused by black ice. If it looks wet at all on those -5 deg C mornings then the road is almost certainly frozen solid. We all need to drive accordingly. It’s probably therefore a good time to mention the metre/heater rule again. This is a mantra the Fire Service has invented to give a rule of thumb about anything combustible near to something that could set it on fire. The drying of clothing in front of a fireplace or heater is fine except for the human tendency to want things to happen quickly causes us to place the damp clothes too close. We like to see the steam rise. Then the phone goes, or tea needs to be cooked or the kids do what kids do and attract our attention. Placed closer than a metre that steam will rise until no moisture is left. The clothing will keep on heating. It might scorch. It might ignite. The metre/heater rule simply saves this from happening.

HELPING HAND: The Westpac Rescue Helicopter in action.

$250,000 raised for Canty rescue chopper This year’s Westpac Chopper Appeal has raised more than $250,000 for Canterbury’s rescue helicopter. This is part of $1.5m raised across the country. All donations from the Westpac Chopper Appeal are distributed back to the 16 rescue helicopter services across the country, meaning money raised locally, stays local. Westpac’s director of corporate affairs, Sue Foley, said the total raised is an outstanding effort. “New Zealanders have once again shown their support rallying behind their local rescue

helicopters,” said Ms Foley. “We’d like to thank all of those who generously dug deep and donated, along with everyone who was involved in the fundraising events in their communities. “The helicopters provide such a vital service that saves lives on a daily basis. It’s important for us to continue to play our part and raise awareness as well as much-needed funds to keep them in the air.” Westpac employees were also crucial to the success of this year’s result with fundraising initiatives organised around the country as well as hitting the streets to collect $128,000 on the nationwide Chopper Street

Appeal day. Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust chairman, Murray Weakley, said: “We are continually overwhelmed by the generosity of locals and could not be prouder to be part of this community. We would like to thank every person and group who gave as well as the support from Westpac through the chopper appeal every year. Every donation makes a big difference to help us keep doing what we do and we are very grateful.” Donations are welcome throughout the year and can be made at www.chopperappeal. co.nz or any Westpac branch.

The Fendalton Bowling Club has applied for funding to repair sewer pipes. There was a blockage incident in late 2014 which was repaired immediately but professional advice was that it would happen again if the pipe was not replaced. The club has requested $6898 to fix the pipes before they host a number of international events over the next two seasons. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will make a decision on whether to fund the club today.

Youth Development Fund

The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will set up a $5000 Youth Development Fund. The money will be for people aged 12-20. Applications will be to assist people in personal development and growth and representation at events. Successful applicants will be required to attend a youth celebration event hosted by the community board to report back on their experiences.

Key local project

The Elmwood Club has been nominated as a key local project by the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board. The community board has recommended that $17,500 from the Metro Strengthening Communities Fund be allocated to the club. The Elmwood Club is a combination of sporting bodies: Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club, HSOB-Burnside Hockey Club, Elmwood Bowling Club, Elmwood Croquet Club, HSOB Football Club, Lincoln University Rugby Club and St Nicholas Netball Club. The club wants to take away the duplication of roles throughout allowing the pooling of resources to benefit those in the clubs.

New diabetes exercise group starts in Christchurch

T

ype 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.” For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese. The programme comprises a circuit that allows the clients to do the exercises at their own pace, without any pressure to keep up, combined with advice from the community diabetes team who support them through the necessary changes to their food habits. “The advantage for these clients is that we are a normal public gym, so our diabetes clients are mixing with people who don’t have health conditions,” team member Ietje van Stolk says. “And by coming to the gym, our diabetes clients are getting out of the house and are meeting other people including people with the same issues and weight problems as they have, and being physically active is very motivating. They encourage each other and there is plenty of fun and humour between themselves and with the instructors, who are there to lean on and help everyone reach their goals.” Medical research shows participation in regular exercise gets the heart rate up, helps strengthen muscles, improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, Ietje points out. It also positively affects lipids and blood pressure, reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves quality of life. Physical Sense Gym & Physio has had many positive comments

True

Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham from clients about the programme. One, who goes six times a week, says he loves having somewhere to go and hates the days he is not going to the gym. Another says, “It’s the only thing I have for me, and I have improved my eating habits.” Others have found walking easier and have increased energy and fitness. To encourage those on limited income, the first four sessions are free, and if clients have WINZ support the programme usually remains free, Ietje says. Attending the gym is as easy as a bus ride which stops right at the front door. There is also plenty of parking available should you choose to drive. Creating smiles for cancer patients GL Health Cancer has the ability to rob those affected of more than their physical health. “I am a ‘people person’ with an outgoing personality. Well, I used to be. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my demeanour changed, and it wasn’t long before my treatment became a lonely and nerveracking journey,” says Miretta, a Look Good Feel Better workshop participant. That’s why Look Good Feel Better exists. The national charity supports Kiwis at a time when they need it most, by providing an opportunity for participants to claim back their personality beyond being a cancer patient - and learn practical tools to combat the ongoing visual and emotional effects of therapy. “It truly was a morale-boosting makeover, I felt like one of the group instead of a patient. It boosted and improved my selfesteem – and felt so darn good!” Miretta says. “It’s often the first time many women will be seen by others without their wig or be touched by a person that isn’t doing so for medical purposes,” Clare O’Higgins, Look Good Feel Better’s general manager, says. “I rarely let people get close, other than those who are dear to me, but the women there all

1 in 2 people deficient in vitamin B12

E

merging research has shown as many as 50 per cent of older adults and as many as 25 per cent of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12. B12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair and prevention of homocysteine - a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34 per cent decrease risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+ who supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their

60s who were low in B12. The reason so many people lack B12 seems to be due to our body’s inability to absorb it as we age, as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in the form of Methylcobalamin sublingual tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and thru bypassing the digestive tract have been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in the body. Further info is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!

Tiny Tots Nursery and Preschool Family business looking after our community

T

iny Tots Nursery and Preschool is a privately-owned and familyoperated centre. We provide a safe and secure environment in which children can learn, create and grow to the best of their abilities. Teachers observe the children through their play, and then incorporate those interests into an individual programme. This helps the children to extend on their learning and enhances their development for the future.

Tiny Tots has an open plan environment both indoors and out, and seeks to provide high quality equipment, resources and facilities to support your child’s learning and development. We like to encourage parents to spend time with their children in the centre to help them settle in, and to share experiences together and to find out how the centre operates during the day. Enquiries welcome through a visit at 148 England St, Linwood, or phone 389 6851.

Start kids young at Lindisfarne

L

indisfarne was established in 1987 and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies, and the preschool is licensed for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne. Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant, and a cook and cleaner. We pride ourselves on being a multicultural centre, both through the nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff. The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well prepared to start primary school.

It’s never too late for music

W

hen Robert Perks MBE founded the Christchurch School of Music in 1955, he was very much focused on providing quality music education to primary-aged students, but we know he’d be pleased to see that CSM now caters for students aged from two to 92. Adults of all ages and abilities are now an integral part of the CSM community and our varied programmes offer something for everyone. Many of our adult students enjoy weekly instrumental, theory or vocal lessons, but we also offer fortnightly options or blocks

of lessons to cater for students whose lives are too busy to cope with a weekly lesson. At CSM, we encourage our students to play in an orchestra or ensemble as soon as they feel ready. Playing with others is great fun and helps students to feel a part of our fabulous musical community. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or an experienced player, CSM can offer you the chance to play in an orchestra, band or one of our many ensembles. Visit www.csm.org.nz, or phone the office on 366 1711 to find out what CSM can offer you.

Get rid of dampness in your house

Stack Electrical

Now with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter.

R

ising damp is an issue that affects many of our older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp, which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently is that many owners of properties which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported that it also provided protection against

S

ow we are well into the coldest month of the year, Cantabrians know they can turn to the team at Enviro Master for help with all their heat pump needs. Enviro Master’s owner and director Grant Wadley knows how important it is for homeowners to receive the best advice when they select a system. That way they can choose a good quality system which is expertly installed, comes with great aftersales service and is just right for them. Enviro Master are independent specialists in heat pumps and air conditioning equipment, and stock an extensive range of top quality brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin and more. Floor console, high wall, ducted, cassette, multi-system and hot water systems are all available, and their expertise means that customers receive a system based on their families’ needs and the environment the pumps are being installed in. Grant explains that heat pumps are energy efficient and multifunctional as they can also be used for cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration. He recommends regular servicing by Enviro Master to make sure your heat pumps are running efficiently and effectively. For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 03 366 0525, visit enviromaster.co.nz or call into 41A Shakespeare Rd, Waltham.

mooth-Air is a New Zealand owned heating and ventilation company who are leaders in their field. They use the latest technology and production techniques to produce a range of heating, ducting and ventilation equipment that is high quality and meets NZ and Australian safety standards. Kitchens can be an area of special concern in many homes and businesses, with cooking odours, grease, smoke and steam being particular problems. To help, the team at Smooth-Air has innovative solutions that will bring fresh air into your kitchen. Their selection of range hoods and ventilation systems are efficient to run, drive out moisture, lower humidity and filter out odours. Range hoods can be design built to customers’ specifications and powder coated to any standard colour. Smooth-Air’s ventilation systems focus on the safety of customers as they reduce the risk of stale air build up. The range hoods are easy to clean, reducing fat build up and subsequent fire risk. Smooth-Air’s technical specialists will work with customers to make sure that the system they select meets all their needs, taking into account the workload in the kitchen, and their national coverage means customers’ kitchen and ventilation projects can be planned, built and dispatched quickly and efficiently. o content have my owners been with this lovely family residence – it’s been their happy home for 20 wonderful years. The time for a change has come, and the opportunity for a lucky new family to make it their own is now presented. Idyllically, located for weekend pursuits, the Heathcote River and Hills with their walkways and cycle tracks are right on the doorstep, while commuters will equally enjoy the short 10-minute drive to the four avenues. The home boasts a generous 250-squaremetre floorplan and solid, permanent material brick construction with Masada cladding on the second level. A home for living and entertaining, living spaces are flexible and fluid - an open plan kitchen/dining room and a family zone with two lounges - each interconnecting and opening out to the wrap-around grounds. The kitchen benefits from engineered stone worktops, wall oven, Bosch dishwasher, good cupboard space and an inviting breakfast bar. There are four great sized double bedrooms on offer, serviced by three bathrooms to ensure the preschool/work rush runs as smoothly as possible. The master bedroom is particularly well-proportioned, the space accentuated by the high pitched roof with wooden beams. Family comfort and convenience is ensured with undertile heating and heat pumps, a vacuum system, an internal access garage, new carpets and being repainted throughout. The easy care section offers a selection of covered and uncovered patio areas, attractive

perimeter planting, new pathways and driveways, and off-street parking. With all your tick boxes rolled into one fabulous package, be quick to secure – for definite sale on or before auction day! Open days: Saturday and Sunday 12pm to 12.45pm. See you at the open homes or for a private viewing appointment, call contact Deb Harvey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 220 6565.
